Ashland Rotary Club is selling assorted nut gift boxes with proceeds benefiting Shelter Box USA, an organization that delivers pre-made survival kits to disaster areas around the globe.
Each one-pound box of nuts — choices include almonds, cashews, honey-roasted cashews or a mixture of the three — is roasted fresh within a few days of delivery. The nuts are made by C.J. Dannemiller Co.
Rotarian Dave Kowalka said this is the first year the Rotary has worked with Shelter Box USA. The group was drawn to the unique service Shelter Box provides.
Shelter Box has delivered more than 30,000 survival kits since 2004. Each kit weighs at least 110 pounds and includes a tent, multi-fuel stove, thermal blankets and insulated groundsheets, cooking pans, a basic tool kit and a children’s pack containing drawing books, crayons and pens.
Box destinations include Afghanistan, Lebanon, Mississippi, Palestine and Guatemala.
Kowalka said the local Rotary Club hopes to raise enough to fund one box, which costs about $1,000.
